Standing Together After the Floods: Bastion Aviation Supports HAART and Hoedspruit Communities

Community Support Beyond Emergency Evacuations

Following the devastating floods that swept through Hoedspruit and surrounding Greater Kruger communities, the need for help extended far beyond guest evacuations and emergency flights. Entire communities were cut off, homes were destroyed, and families were left with almost nothing.

In the aftermath of the floods, Bastion Aviation became aware of urgent humanitarian needs through HAART, an organisation deeply embedded in supporting communities on the northern boundary of the Kruger Park village areas.

Communities Cut Off When Help Was Needed Most

HAART’s work reaches far beyond animal welfare. The organisation provides:

  • Healthcare support for animals
  • Conservation education for local schools
  • Meals for vulnerable individuals
  • Food parcels for families in need

When the floods struck, access roads to many of these communities were completely destroyed, leaving HAART unable to reach the very people who depended on them most Bastion – HAART Blog.

As floodwaters receded, the full scale of the damage became painfully clear.

One of the hardest-hit areas was a community living along the Letaba River banks, where families lost nearly everything:

  • 43 families were left homeless, now sheltering at a local church
  • 116 homes were declared to have severe water damage

For many, recovery would be a long and uncertain road

Aviation as a Lifeline in Hoedspruit

Recognising the urgency of the situation, Bastion Aviation stepped in to help bridge the gap where road access had failed.

A donation of R10,000 worth of essential supplies was mobilised immediately, including:

  • Non-perishable food items
  • Animal food
  • Nappies
  • Essential household supplies

These critical supplies were flown from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit Civil Airport aboard Bastion Aviation’s Bell 407 helicopter, piloted by local Hoedspruit pilot Donovan de Wet Bastion.

At Hoedspruit Civil, Colleen, a representative from HAART, met the aircraft to receive the donations — a moment marked by deep gratitude and emotion, reflecting just how urgently the support was needed.

More Than Flights — A Commitment to Humanity

While Bastion Aviation is known for private charters, helicopter operations, and access to remote regions across Southern Africa, moments like these highlight a deeper purpose.

When roads disappear and communities are isolated, aviation becomes a lifeline — not only for travellers, but for people facing real hardship.

“Our hearts go out to every individual and family affected by these floods. The loss experienced by these communities is profound, and recovery will take time, strength, and continued support,” the Bastion team shared Bastion – HAART Blog.

In times like these, community, compassion, and collective effort matter more than ever. From the ground and from the air, coming together can make all the difference.

To HAART, to the communities rebuilding, and to everyone who continues to step up:
we stand with you.
